FEDERAL EMPLOYEES DON'T HAVE FAMILIES

So today is Family day in Ontario. Now don't let this name fool you. Having or being part of a family does not actually mean you'll be able to enjoy this holiday.

In Ottawa a rather large number of people are employed by the Federal Government including myself. Due to the hasty creation of this so-called 'family day' federal employees are not actually able to celebrate it due to conflicts with our internal contracts and a new stat holiday.

Now some of you might be thinking... well you're just civil servants surely you don't have families.

That my friends is myth #1. In fact many (I daresay most) federal employees do either have families of their own or a part of a family in some capacity.

Oh ok, well if you do have a family at least they know you won't have the day off and will occupy themselves some other way...

That my friends is myth #2. Those in the federal service who have children (I do not) are in a particularly bad spot as most day cares and schools are closed yet parents in the employ of her majesty must still report for duty or use banked vacation days. So we are left with a situation where children have no engagements on this particular day, and where civil servant parents are forced to work resulting in families being further apart not closer together.

Good work Dalton....

Cheers,

P
